The history of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated in Los Angeles is deeply rooted in a legacy of leadership, sisterhood, and service that began in 1937.
The first chapter in the city, Xi Alpha, was organized by ten trailblazing women who sought to make a lasting impact in the community by promoting Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Community Service. Their efforts laid the groundwork for the Zeta legacy in Los Angeles.
As the membership and influence of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., grew, the need for graduate chapters became clear. In response, the Beta Eta Zeta chapter was chartered, followed by the establishment of the Gamma Sigma Zeta chapter. These graduate chapters flourished, working both cooperatively and independently to further the sorority's mission. However, the strength of unity soon became evident. In 1955, under the leadership of Soror Marjorie Ellis, the members of Gamma Sigma Zeta made the visionary decision to merge the chapters, forming what is now known as Alpha Psi Zeta Chapter.
Since its chartering, Alpha Psi Zeta has remained a beacon of excellence, upholding the pillars of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood. For over six decades, the chapter has not only expanded its membership but has also solidified its presence as a leading force in the greater Los Angeles area.
The chapter's influence extends beyond service projects and scholarship programs. Alpha Psi Zeta is home to several distinguished members who have made significant contributions to society. Among them is Past International President Sheryl P. Underwood, a renowned comedian, talk show host, and dynamic leader who has elevated the visibility of Zeta Phi Beta on national and international platforms. Another prominent member is Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove, who represents California’s 37th Congressional District and tirelessly advocates for equity, justice, and community empowerment.
These remarkable women, along with countless others, have left an indelible mark on Alpha Psi Zeta Chapter and continue to inspire future generations of Zetas to strive for excellence. With a commitment to fostering sisterhood and service, Alpha Psi Zeta Chapter proudly carries forward the legacy started by the visionary women in Los Angeles remaining steadfast in its mission to uplift the community and live out the principles of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
